Frequenty Asked Questions

Last Updated: June 23, 1997

This is a list of questions which we are often asked. If you do not find the answer you are looking for, feel free to contact us and we will be happy to discuss your specific needs. Information about current rates is not discussed here; for that see Rates and Services page.

Q.)
Do I need to provide a layout of my site?

A.)
That's up to you. Some customers know exactly what they want their site to look like; they provide a layout of each web page. Other customers have a catalog, a brochure, or similar documents and they leave the organization of the site to us.

Q.)
What other materials do you need to create my site?

A.)
Here is a list of information that you should supply us with:

  • Any graphics you want scanned.
  • A list of keywords that are relevant to your site. For example: flowers, florist, wire, delivery, carnation, carnations, rose, roses, Valentine's Day, gift, basket.
  • The copy (please, not handwritten) to be included. The ideal format is on an IBM formatted diskette in plain-text format. We can also scan (OCR) text into the computer, but this takes longer.
  • A brief (20 words or less) description of your business and the web site. This will be used to describe your site in search engines like Yahoo.

Also, please describe the overall image that you want to convey. For example, a company selling surfboards might desire a colorful splashy look, while a doctor's office might aim for a classy professional appearance.

Q.)
I need changes done to my site every month or so. Do I have to keep paying more to keep my prices and special information current?

A.)
Small changes like price updates are considered to be part of the monthly account maintenance. Charges at our standard rate of $50/hour will apply if the change requires scanning new graphics, the creation of a whole new page, or generally anything that would take more than a few minutes.

Q.)
Will people find my site when they use a search engine like Webcrawler?

A.)
Yes. We do our best to have our customers appear in a wide variety of the most important search engines. There is never a guarantee of your placement in the list; but we know several tricks that make sites appear close to the top.

Q.)
Do I have to sign a contract?

A.)
For our mutual protection, we have formal agreements prepared. You can read them on our Legal Page.

Q.)
Do you need a deposit to start work?

A.)
Yes, we require a 50% deposit on a site. When the web design work is done, we expect the remaining 50%. At this point, we begin the proofing phase of the development, where we can make corrections or changes to the site. We want you to be 100% satisfied with the results.

Q.)
How do you show me how popular my site is?

A.)
Counters can be used to log number of hits and banner pages can also be created to report number of hits and any reciprical exchange links that has been established can report daily reports.

Q.)
What will my web address look like?

A.)
Your web address, or URL, will look like this: http://webshed.com/yourbiz/ where yourbiz is whatever name you'd like to use for your site. Remember to keep it short and sweet to make it easier for your clients to use.

We also allow for virtual domains, in which case your URL would appear like this: http://www.yourbiz.com/

Q.)
Do I need somebody's permission if I want to link to their site?

A.)
No. You can link your site to anybody's web page. However, it is often a good idea to tell them, because they might return the favor and link to your home page, thereby increasing traffic. Arrangements such as these are called trade-off links and usually benefit all parties involved.

Q.)
Does it really make any difference what browser one uses?

A.)
Only if you think that appearance counts as much as content. The copy of your site will be available to anybody who has web access. The graphics, the colors, the background pattern, alignments of text, and character styles will vary from browser to browser. The goal of web design is not to create the appearance of the site--we must simultaneously create many appearances which will vary from user to user. Our HTML techniques insure that the site will look good on all browsers. We can do this, and at the same time optimize all sites for the most popular and feature-laden browsers.
